Planting/Harvesting Crops

Please see the Smallholder License for rules on growing crops. This section provides a little more detail.

To plant and harvest crops, Occupants will be required to follow the consumable item tag for their ‘seeds’. Here is what one of those looks like:

On this tag, you’ll see the important parts:

  • Consumable: Indicates the type of item card
  • Growth Composite: Item Name
  • Plant Cluster: The specific type of crop you’ll grow
  • A simple collection…: The description of the consumable
  • Time Required: Players must spend 5 minutes of role play planting the seeds. After 60 minutes, they may come back and harvest whatever grows.
  • Atomics: These are the atomic elements they will get from the plants they grow. Carbon, Oxygen, and Magnesium.
  • Pills at the bottom: Some number of these will be filled in. Players can use a consumable a number of times equal to the number of NOT filled-in pills. When they use 1 or more, they are responsible for filling in the pill to indicate they’ve consumed that ‘charge’.

An important note about all crops: Every single composite yields 0, 1, or 2 plants. There is a specific chance of each (with zero being a very low chance). In the future, there will be ways to improve your chances.

In order to plant crops, you’ll need to do so in Ag-Sec on the ship. Before you do any planting, you’ll need to rent a Smallholder Plot. See this guide for how to do that. In Ag-Sec, you will find all the necessary materials:

  • "Planter Cup" for planting the composite
  • "Soil"
  • "Gardening tools"

While we provide gardening tools to simulate the roleplay, we highly encourage players to bring their own kits for gardening.

Once you’re ready to plant your composite, you will need to:

  1. Spend the time specified on the composite card for each growth composite you’re using. This must be uninterrupted. Remember: One plant per Smallholder Plot. This means if you want to grow 5 Plant Clusters (as shown above), you’ll need to spend 25 minutes planting them and you will need 5 rented plots. (There will be methods to shorten this time introduced later)
  2. Bring the prepped plant(s) to the counter where you’ll find sticker sheets and a marker.
  3. Write your Occupant name and the time that the crop should complete growing (based on the time you arrive at the counter) on a sticker and attach the sticker to the planter cup prop. IMPORTANT: If you do not do this step, you won’t be able to claim your plants later.
  4. Hand the prop over to the head of department or one of their designated staff members.

Now, you must wait until the specified time has completed. In the case of our Plant Cluster, this is 60 minutes. Bear in mind - you do not have to wait 60 minutes per-plant. They all grow together at the same rate. Once you're ready to harvest your plant, you will need to:

  1. Return to Ag-Sec after the required time has passed.
  2. Request your grown plants from the head of department or one of their designated staff members.
  3. When you receive the grown plants, you must spend 1 minute of uninterrupted time harvesting the plant (similarly to how you would on an away mission). You do NOT need to scan the plant first.
  4. Complete!

Hold on to the props! These are your ‘items’ and can be used in either the Recycler, or be Refined into additional Growth Composites.

IMPORTANT:

  • Players are NOT ALLOWED behind the counter.
  • Players may not touch the Hydroponics stack
  • Players may not collect plants grown by other players without the other player's explicitly-given-to-staff permission. You must speak directly to the head of department or to a staff member who will be available when you’re harvesting that someone else is allowed to harvest your plants.
